33 years ago some Mackay people gathered together to support the campaign to protect the Wet Tropics from destruction by the Daintree Road. That's the day Mackay Conservation Group was born.
They wanted to stop the Cape Tribulation road construction. Although that battle was lost, ultimately the campaign led to World Heritage listing of the Wet Tropics.
Since then the group has led the community in protecting our environment. We have been involved in campaigns to protect the Slade Point dunes and wetlands, create the Sandfly Creek environmental reserve, end rainforest logging at Eungella, protect our rivers from inappropriate dams, halting dangerous climate change and more.
It's not an easy job but we think our work is vital if we are to have clean air, clean water and space for all living things.
