Billions of dollars worth of mine rehabilitation is needed on Queensland's existing mines. 

Mackay Conservation Group continues to hold concerns that mining companies are underestimating mine rehabilitation costs, taxpayers are being left to foot cleanup bills, and thousands of mines in Queensland remain abandoned and unrehabilitated. 

There are more than 15,000 abandoned mine sites in Queensland and dozens of them are in the Mackay-Whitsunday region.

Rehabilitating these abandoned mines would benefit not only the environment but also benefit our local economy via jobs in rehabilitation work.
