Dudgeon Point coal terminal extension: Petition to Queensland Coordinator General

The proposed Dudgeon Point Coal Terminals Project (DPCT) consists of two coal export terminals, and associated infrastructure, with a combined capacity of up to 180 million tonnes per annum.

Mackay Conservation Group (MCG) is concerned about this project and is working to protect our health, our community and the Great Barrier Reef from the threat of the Dudgeon Point Coal Port and the damage it will cause.

Dear Mr. Barry Broe,

Please give residents of Mackay peace of mind by not extending the time period for the Dudgeon Point coal terminal.

We the undersigned are very concerned about the impacts of the proposed Dudgeon Point coal terminal on the residents and local environment in Mackay. Our concerns include: coal dust in the port side residential communities, the damage caused by the dredging of 14 million cubic metres which will pollute the local marine environment and the increased number of coal ships.

The Dudgeon Point coal terminal project will be taken out of the environmental approvals process in late June 2014 unless you extend the time period for the proponents to provide an Environmental Impact Statement. We call on you not to extend the time period for the project out of consideration for the residents of Mackay who are living with uncertainty in relation to the project and the impacts of the project on air and water quality in the region.

Signed,

I agree with everything Gordon is saying. We also get coal dust here at South Mackay – our front door is covered with black dust most of the time.

I am a regular visitor to Mackay and The Whitsunday Region. For me the attraction is the Great Barrier Reef, the beaches and the wildlife in particular birds. Mines are short term and extracted in the cheapest, most expedient manner. Tourism is unlimited in its potential.

Lose what you have in the unique flora and fauna of the coast and reef and it’s lost forever!

As a member of an about to be affected community already affected by coal dust and other nuisances from DBCT I heartily object to any further intrusion on my community

Two years with this monster looming has been long enough for local communities. Don’t let NQBP have more time to keep this option open. We don’t need new coal ports!

Upgrade and utilise the existing port near by at hay point, leave this important coastal rocky reef at the mouth of a major estuary system alone. Not only would the environment be damaged by the port and operations, but it would lock out locals from another fishing area.

Really don’t want this to go ahead, the Reef is too important to risk damaging.
