Did you know that without the Greenhouse Effect we would be living on a planet too cold to sustain any life at all? Would you like to know how light interacts with carbon dioxide and methane molecules to warm the earth?
The University of Chicago is offering a free course about climate change and climate modelling starting on October 3 this year. If you are one of those people who would like to know more about how climate scientists construct models then this is a great course to learn the fundamentals.
In order to make study easier, MCG is making the Environment Centre available for people living in Mackay to get together and discuss each week's subject matter so that we can gain a better understanding of the topic.
You don't need to be a scientific expert to undertake the course but you will need an understanding of algebra to understand the models.
The course runs from 3 October 2016 to 1 January 2017 and costs nothing to enrol. The course is delivered by a series of video lectures by climate scientist, Dr David Archer. All the texts and workbooks are provided.
In order to undertake the course you need to go to the website https://www.coursera.org/learn/global-warming and enrol before 3 October. On 6 October we'll hold our first meeting to discuss the subject matter of Week 1. After that we'll hold a meeting every Thursday until the course is completed.
