Protect Urannah Creek - No Taxpayer Funding For Private Dams

Please sign our petition calling on the Queensland Premier to rule out taxpayer funding for the the private Urannah Dam.

Dear Premier Palaszczuk

I am a concerned citizen and I am calling on you to rule out taxpayer funding for the proposed Urannah Creek Dam Project.

Urannah Creek west of Mackay has been described as the best example of pre-European river systems in Central Queensland. Its isolated location has prevented the introduction of weeds and the almost continuous flow of water in the stream supports a range of life, including the Irwin's Turtle which was discovered by famed naturalists Steve and Bob Irwin in 1990. This is a high priority species in Queensland. Its range covers only an estimated 25 square kilometres, mostly in and around the Urannah Creek. There is also pertinent concerns around loss of groundwater recharge for lower Burdekin farmers given the outcomes of other damming projects int the region.

Over the past five decades many investigations have been carried out regarding a dam on Urannah Creek. None of these investigations have economically justified construction of the dam, especially when they are examined using modern economic analysis techniques, such as those used by Building Queensland. The most recent analysis of the proposed Urannah Dam by Altus Impact found that the dam will return as little as 26 cents for every dollar it costs.

I want you to commit that you and your Government will NOT provide any taxpayer funds to support this private dam.
