Start the Switch reaches, inspires, and motivates young people to take action on climate change and sustainability. Launching with an inspirational youth summit, the program will continue as dedicated mentors support secondary school students to create real change by running projects in their schools and communities. Uniquely, this program supports secondary schools students in a peer-to-peer environment to create change by running projects in their school.
Developed by the Australian Youth Climate Coalition (AYCC) in 2012 the program presents climate change and sustainability information in a fresh, innovative and engaging way. Over a one-day ‘Start the Switch’ summit, secondary school students select projects to create change in their schools and local communities and are provided skills training and project planning support to maximize their effectiveness.
On Wednesday the 28th May 2014 Mackay Conservation Group held their first Start the Switch summit with 7 schools in attendance; Pioneer State High School, Whitsunday Anglican School, Carlisle Christian College, Mackay Christian College, Mackay North State High School, Sarina State High School and Mercy College Mackay.
