Volunteer for Start the Switch

Interested in exciting green leadership opportunities? Become a Youth Mentor for ‘Start the Switch’ 2015!

Mackay Conservation Group (MCG) is searching for enthusiastic individuals between the ages of 17 & 29 to help with:

  • Creating inspirational and life changing educational environmental programs;

  • Planning and overseeing exciting events;

  • Working with a passionate team of motivated volunteers and students

‘Start the Switch’ is a program for high school students that enables and empowers them to introduce sustainability programs into their schools. We kick off with a summit 4th-5th of March, and the programs continue throughout the year!

Get involved!

Mentoring students for ‘Start the Switch’ is a fun, engaging, and rewarding way to inspire young people to take charge of their future, while meeting like-minded individuals along the way. Mentors will receive thorough training surrounding the event, and upon completion of the program receive a signed certificate of completion from the Mackay Conservation Group coordinator.This is a great opportunity to build your work experience portfolio and create valuable networks in the education, media and NGO sectors.

Make a difference!

As a Volunteer Youth Mentor, your responsibilities include:

  • Supporting student action groups and their schools through the ‘Start the Switch’ programs

  • Guide students through the process of switching their schools on to sustainability, and help skill them up to run their group with less support

We aren’t looking for climate scientists or sustainability experts! We’re looking for young people who are sociable, interested in the environment, and invested in helping passionate, motivated high school students succeed.

Guide young leaders!

The mentorship period runs for about three months, during which time mentors will:

  • Attend the Start the Switch Summit 4th -5th March 2015

  • Participate in weekly/biweekly check-ins with their group of students (phone or email), providing support and guidance as needed

  • Visit their student group’s school once a month and facilitate meetings with the students

  • Attend biweekly/monthly meetings with other mentors to report on students’ progress

Develop your professional skills!

All mentors are encouraged to attend a day-long training program in February 2015, during which time we will provide you with all the skills necessary to best support your students’ group. Areas of training include group building, group facilitation, and community outreach, as well as an in-depth look at the different programs offered to the students.
