The Queensland Government is calling for submissions on the Waste Reduction and Recycling Amendment Bill 2017. This amendment introduces two important initiatives:
Firstly, a statewide container refund scheme; and, secondly, a ban on the supply of lightweight plastic shopping bags in Queensland.
The bill also amends the end of waste framework in the Waste Reduction and Recycling Act 2011 to ensure better end use of recyclables.
Mackay Conservation Group supports this initiative.
The Waste Reduction and Recycling Amendment Bill 2017 is open for comment to the parliamentary inquiry until Monday, 3 July.
According to the Explanatory Notes, the objectives of the Bill are to:
a) Provide a head of power for the introduction of a:
o lightweight plastic shopping bag ban;
o container refund scheme for Queensland; and
b) Amend provisions in relation to End of Waste Codes to:
o enable greater control on the use of end of waste resources, when necessary, to reduce the potential for environmental harm; &
o streamline and clarify administrative arrangements for end of waste approvals.
We recommend that you get a submission in to support the Bill, just in case there are many negative submissions encouraged by the retail industry.
The submission can be short and sweet, and may even just say that you support the bill. Or you could give reasons such as why you support recycling, or container refund, or why you think there should be fewer plastic bags in the environment. If you are submitting an email you should put 'Waste Reduction and Recycling Amendment Bill 2017’ in the Subject line.
This is very short notice, so getting something in is better than nothing.
Thanks for making this a better world.
