Celebrating 40 Years of Conservation in Mackay
11 October 2024
Mackay Conservation Group is celebrating a milestone 40th anniversary this year, marking four decades of dedicated service to protecting the region’s natural environment and promoting a sustainable future.
Founded in 1984 by members of the local community, the independently-run group has played a pivotal role in safeguarding Mackay’s unique ecosystems, from coastal wetlands to rainforests and diverse marine life. Over the years, the group has grown into a vital advocate for environmental protection, working on issues such as climate change, protecting the reef, and calling on political leaders to safeguard our natural area and ensure a future where nature and development coexist sustainably.
As the group reflects on its achievements over the past four decades, its members are also looking ahead to the future, continuing the push for cleaner, greener, and more sustainable development in the Mackay region.
“Our anniversary is not just about celebrating what we’ve accomplished,” said Mackay Conservation Group’s coordinator, Emma Barrett. “It’s a call to action for the next 40 years. Together with our community, we will continue to advocate for a thriving, resilient environment, empowering locals to take the lead in shaping a climate-safe and sustainable future.”
The conservation group invites the community to join in the celebrations on Saturday 12 October from 6pm at the organisation's office at 156 Wood Street, Mackay.
