Mackay's mangroves are iconic to the Pioneer River and are unique ecosystems. They support fishing species, acting as fish nurseries before they swim to the wider ocean; they are home to crabs, birds and the vulnerable, native water mouse. Mackay's mangroves also act as mega-carbon sinks, protect our homes from storm surges and filter water before it gets to the Great Barrier Reef.
Sadly, our mangroves are also under threat from devastating developments like the proposed Mackay Port Access road, planned to clear mangroves in Vines Creek and revoke 20 hectares of declared Fish Habitat Area. We know progress can be made without sacrificing our natural environment and carbon-sinks. We need to protect our mangroves now more than ever.
Come along to this info night and hear from special guest, Dr Norman Duke, who has studied Mackay's mangroves for many years. Find out how you can take action to protect Mackay's mangroves for now, and generations to come!
