Mackay Conservation Group and Capricornia Conservation Council have submitted a joint response to the Queensland Government’s Draft Renewables Regulatory Framework, calling for stronger environmental protections, greater community benefits, and alignment with the First Nations Clean Energy Strategy.
As Queensland accelerates its shift to renewable energy, our organisations recognise the importance of getting the transition right. While we support the move toward clean energy, it must be done in a way that protects biodiversity, respects First Nations rights and interests, and delivers genuine benefits to local communities.
A key recommendation of the submission is the full integration of the First Nations Clean Energy Strategy, ensuring Traditional Owners have a central role in decision-making and benefit-sharing. First Nations people have cared for Country for thousands of years, and they must be empowered to lead this transition. The government must provide clear pathways for co-design and partnership with First Nations communities.
The submission also emphasises the need for:
-
Clear and enforceable environmental protections for biodiversity and cultural heritage.
-
Transparent community engagement processes that give regional communities a voice in project development.
-
Support for nature-positive renewable energy projects
-
Stronger regulatory measures to ensure developers meet social and environmental obligations.
Queensland has a once-in-a-generation opportunity to set a gold standard for renewable energy development. By embedding environmental protection and First Nations leadership at the heart of the regulatory framework, we can ensure a just and sustainable energy future.
