Capricornia Energy Hub is a pumped hydro energy storage (PHES) project being proposed 7km downstream from Eungella Dam.
This project is currently in the process of writing an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) which will be available for public comment around late 2025, before approval being decided on by the Coordinator General.

TIMELINE
This is the current stage of the project. The project team have stated they aim to release their EIS later in 2025. Any interested party (including members of the public) can then make a submission that will aid the coordinator general on their decision of whether to approve the project.

The PHES is comprised of an in-stream lower reservoir along the Broken River and an upper reservoir on a higher area of land to the west of the river. This project, if approved, will store energy produced by renewables during low-demand times and release it during high-demand times, helping renewable energy become more reliable.
Unfortunately, the PHES will impact the habitat of the project footprint which may be felt negatively by inhabiting flora and fauna, as well as impacting natural river flow.
